42-51322, 767 BS(MACR 10742) went down on Dec 17, 1944 during the mission to Blechhammer. B-24
Just reading the MACR and found it very strange
The ship was last seen in the area of Muglitz (Mohelnice) Czechoslovakia after being attacked by the fighters.
German KU report indicates that the plane crashed in the area of Gleiwitz (today in Poland), 7 crewmembers were captured by Germans in the area of Rybnik (approx. 25 km south of Gleiwitz).
But... the pilot - Lt. Lang claimed that the plane crashed 25 km south of Budapest, Hungary which is over 150 miles south of Gleiwitz/Rybnik area. the pilot and 3 other crewmembers were picked up by the Russians
IMHO the only explanation is that the plane after being attacked by fighters was heading in the north-East direction, where over Rybnik 7 of the crew bailed out, than the ship made a turn and started to head to the south and crashed in the Hungary, where rest of the crew bailed out.

I research the USAAF missions over Poland in WWII, and I have received yesterday an invitation to the unveiling of a memorial plate, dedicated to a 99th BG crew, which we shot down on a Blechhammer mission of December 26th 1944. The ceremony will take place in the village of Marklowice, near Rybnik, Poland.
I would like to share with information with anyone interested.
The B-17 was #44-6663, and was lost on a 26.Dec.1944 mission to Blechhammer.
The B-17 exploded in midair circa 40 km south of target, in the area of Rybnik, Poland.
Two crew members bailed out, the remaining 9 died.
The crew was:
2Lt. Robert H. Flake - KIA
1Lt. John E. Reese - KIA
F/O Harold E. Mitchell - KIA
S/Sgt Frederic Gilbert Weiss - POW
Sgt Morton (NMI) Carlis - KIA
Sgt Paul T. Varley - KIA
Sgt Sherwood T. Griswold - KIA
Sgt Clyde S. Plants, Jr. - KIA
S/Sgt Marle Darwin Smith - POW
Sgt Theodore T. Gilson (TG) - KIA
Sgt Seymour (NMI) Apt (PH) - KIA
I will appreciate if this news cold be shared with the
99th BG veterans, and perhaps some of the 99th BGA
would like to attend the ceremony. You may also share
my e-mail and mailing address, in case someone would
like to attend the ceremony, and needs help in
arranging travelling details
